Agartala, 24th June 2026: West Tripura District Magistrate Dr. Vishal Kumar has expressed serious concern over the evolving drug menace in the state, noting that Tripura has shifted from being a mere transit corridor to a zone of rising local consumption.
“Earlier, intelligence agencies reported that Tripura used to function as a transition zone — drugs would pass through here and move elsewhere. But in recent years, it has been observed that many traffickers themselves have started consuming. This change is worrying,” Dr. Kumar stated while addressing the issue.
He emphasized that understanding the entire trafficking network is essential to identify the root causes. “The fact that Tripura was once only a transit zone but is now witnessing consumption is correct. The government is serious about this, and we are working to break the chain,” he added.
Highlighting regional challenges, Dr. Kumar pointed to neighboring countries. “In places like Myanmar and Bangladesh, law and order problems and administrative issues have worsened in the last two to three years. As Tripura lies in a critical zone between these countries, tackling the situation becomes more difficult. Yet, the government remains committed and is taking action.”
The DM reiterated that both state and central authorities are treating the matter with urgency, aiming to dismantle the networks fueling the drug crisis in the region.
