Agartala, 16th July 2026: On the holy Rath Yatra celebrations, the Tripura Pradesh Congress has demanded that the state government make public all investigation reports related to major incidents of the past eight years, including the 2023 Kumarghat Rath tragedy in which 10 devotees lost their lives.
In a statement issued by Congress spokesperson Prabir Chakraborty, the party said that while the government’s security measures and alerts ahead of Rath Yatra are welcome in the interest of public safety, several questions remain unanswered regarding past incidents, particularly the Kumarghat tragedy.
The Congress alleged that three years ago, during the Rath Yatra at Kumarghat, a decision was taken to replace the traditional wooden chariot with an iron structure and alter the planned route. According to the party, the chariot came into contact with an overhead electric wire, resulting in the deaths of 10 devotees, including women and children.
The opposition party claimed that despite the scale of the tragedy, the complete investigation findings have not been made public and demanded exemplary punishment for those responsible, adequate compensation for the victims’ families, and government employment for one member of each affected family.
The Congress also alleged that several other major incidents in Tripura over the past eight years—including alleged custodial deaths, murders, financial irregularities, and explosion-related incidents—have not seen transparent investigations or public disclosure of final reports.
“Instead of bringing the truth before the people, investigations in several cases appear to have been delayed in a manner that prevents the real culprits from being exposed,” the statement said.
The party also criticised the state government’s handling of the anti-drug campaign, questioning why, despite repeated claims of large-scale drug seizures, the alleged masterminds behind drug networks have not faced strong action.
The Congress alleged that while earlier governments had publicly destroyed seized narcotics with media coverage, there has been a lack of transparency in the current administration regarding the disposal of seized drugs. It further alleged that some influential people linked to drug networks have been seen sharing platforms with political leaders.
The statement also urged BJP workers and supporters to reflect on incidents involving political violence after the 2018 change of government, including alleged killings of BJP leaders and workers, and claimed that many party workers, particularly from tribal communities, had suffered due to political conflicts.
The Tripura Pradesh Congress reiterated its demand for the publication of all credible reports from magistrate-level and police investigations into major incidents in the state.
Calling for greater accountability and transparency, the party appealed to citizens to join democratic movements against what it described as “administrative failures and lack of accountability.”
“People’s strength can establish the truth and help build a transparent and accountable administration,” the statement added.
