Agartala, 28th August 2026: Tripura Legislative Assembly on Friday lauded judoka Asmita Dey for her historic achievement at the Commonwealth Games, with the House passing a congratulatory motion in recognition of her remarkable success.
The motion was moved by Assembly Speaker Rampada Jamatia on the second day of the ongoing session. Members of the House congratulated the young athlete for bringing laurels to Tripura after securing a historic gold medal in the women’s 48kg judo category at the 23rd Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
Asmita scripted history on July 31, 2026, defeating Canada’s Heidi Quach in the final through a Golden Score victory. With the triumph, she became the first Indian judoka to win a Commonwealth Games gold medal.
The Assembly particularly highlighted Asmita’s humble beginnings in South Sonaichhari village under Belonia subdivision of South Tripura. Born on March 22, 2003, she is the youngest daughter of the late Arjun Dey and Munni Patari Dey.
Describing her journey as an example of determination and perseverance, the House said Asmita overcame several obstacles through discipline, confidence, hard work and unwavering commitment to her sport.
Her achievement, the Assembly observed, carries significance beyond the medal itself. It demonstrates that talented youngsters from remote and rural areas can reach the highest levels of international sport with dedication and proper support.
The House expressed hope that Asmita’s success would inspire a new generation of athletes in Tripura and encourage more young people to pursue sports as a career and compete on national and international platforms.
The Assembly further noted that Asmita has already shifted her focus towards intensive preparations for the Asian Games judo competition in Japan in September, where she will seek to continue her impressive run on the international stage.
Extending its “heartfelt congratulations and best wishes” to the athlete, the House also acknowledged the role played by her family, coaches, brother and other well-wishers in supporting her journey.
The Assembly wished Asmita good health and continued success, expressing confidence that the young judoka would bring greater recognition and prestige to both Tripura and India in the years ahead.
