Agartala, 1st September 2026 : Marking National Drivers’ Day, an organisational convention for motor transport workers was held at Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan in Agartala, bringing together drivers and assistant drivers from different parts of Tripura. The programme was organised by the All Drivers and Assistant Drivers Association, an organisation approved by the Mazdoor Monitoring Cell.
Former Union Minister of State and BJP leader Pratima Bhoumik attended the programme and highlighted the vital contribution of drivers to society and the economy. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the event, Bhoumik said drivers play an indispensable role in the continuous process of nation-building.
She said drivers are responsible for transporting construction materials, essential commodities, patients and passengers, making them an integral part of everyday life. “They are the backbone—the spinal cord—of our transportation system,” she said, stressing that people from every section of society, including entrepreneurs, workers, farmers, startups and youth, contribute to nation-building, while the contribution of drivers is equally significant.
Bhoumik extended her wishes for the health and safety of drivers and their families. She also assured that efforts would be made to stand with them and address the challenges they face.
The association also placed a charter of nine demands before the authorities. Responding to a question on the demands, Bhoumik said the issues raised by drivers were not merely personal concerns but matters connected with society as a whole.
She pointed to concerns ranging from road conditions to arrangements for drivers when they fall ill. According to her, drivers are often overlooked despite being essential to the functioning of almost every sector. Whether people work in schools, hospitals, offices or other institutions, she said, their daily movement and access to essential goods depend heavily on drivers.
Bhoumik prayed for the safety and wellbeing of drivers and their families, invoking Mata Tripureswari of Matabari for their continued protection while travelling and serving society.
