Agartala, 18th September 2026 : The much-awaited development work along the banks of the Howrah River in Agartala has been completed and the project will be formally inaugurated on September 22 by Tripura Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha, Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) Mayor Dipak Majumder said.
Speaking about the project, the Mayor said the 1.7-km stretch along the Howrah River has undergone a major transformation under the Smart City Mission. The project, costing more than Rs 96 crore, includes parks and recreational facilities designed for children, senior citizens and the general public.
Majumder said the area, which was earlier largely neglected and used as a dumping ground, had accumulated garbage and contributed to pollution of the river. People living temporarily along the riverbank also used the area for various purposes. The redevelopment has now transformed the neglected stretch into a modern public space with landscaped areas, greenery and other civic amenities.
He said the project has also incorporated features highlighting different varieties of plants and elements associated with the area’s heritage, along with modern facilities that can be used by children and future generations.
The Mayor thanked the Smart City Mission, officials of Agartala Smart City Mission Limited, AMC Commissioner, corporators and local residents for their cooperation in completing the project. He acknowledged that the implementation process faced several difficulties and obstacles but said collective support from the government, the corporation and local residents helped bring the project to completion.
Majumder said residents have already started visiting the newly developed area ahead of the formal inauguration and expressed happiness over the transformation.
He, however, urged citizens to take responsibility for protecting the newly created public infrastructure.
“Government assets are created for the people, and it is equally important that people protect these assets,” he said, appealing to residents to cooperate in maintaining the riverfront and keeping the area clean.
