Agartala: August 10. In a significant move aimed at enhancing the overall development of the city, the Agartala Municipal Corporation has approved its budget of Rs 397 crore today. The presentation took place in the presence of all corporators and was subsequently accepted following discussions on Thursday.

Mayor Dipak Majumdar, during a press conference, outlined the key areas where the budget allocation would be directed. This includes the renovation of roads, drains, installation of lighting, establishment of gyms, and the creation of parks. However, Mayor Majumdar noted that there is a deficit of over 55 lakh rupees in the approved budget.

He assured that this shortfall would be covered using the corporation’s internal revenue sources. In a bid to support families who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation, Agartala Pur Nigam has decided to grant a 10 percent discount on taxes collected from the families of martyrs.

Mayor Majumdar highlighted plans to enhance the city’s infrastructure by installing three additional Danish pumps to address rainwater-related issues. These pumps will be stationed at strategic locations including Ramnagar No. 4, Shakuntala Road, and Krishnanagar Satsang Ashram. Moreover, efforts are underway to establish ward offices in various areas, enabling the Agartala Municipal Corporation to better address the needs of residents.

Emphasizing the corporation’s commitment to residents’ basic requirements, Mayor Majumdar underlined that AMC is dedicated to maintaining transparency and cleanliness within the city. Despite these positive strides, a significant concern remains regarding waste management. A staggering 50 percent of waste material is currently not being collected house-to-house.

Additionally, some residents are unknowingly contributing to littering issues, especially during the nighttime. This behavior includes improper disposal of garbage into drains, creating hurdles for maintaining a clean environment.

Mayor Majumdar expressed regret over the fact that only 49 percent of citizens are contributing taxes, even though there are persistent demands for improved drainage systems, road repairs, and access to clean drinking water. He stressed that without proper tax collection, undertaking developmental projects becomes challenging. Addressing the escalating dengue situation in the city, Mayor Majumdar mandated zonal officers to conduct regular mosquito repellent spraying in households and drain cleaning. If necessary, individuals will also be appointed to distribute bleaching powder to residences to combat dengue.
