BY TC News Desk

Agartala, November 11: The Institution of Engineers (India) (IEI), Tripura State Centre organized a seminar program yesterday in connection with Transport Day 2023. This program was held in the Seminar Hall of IEI, Tripura State Centre, Gurkhabasti here.

Transport Day is observed on 10th November to educate people about the use of public transport and become an active participant in making the world a better place to live. One of the purposes of observing Transport Day is to promote such transportation systems which ultimately help in improving traffic congestion in the cities and the health of the environment. Delay and noise in the traffic system increase pollution rates and emissions of harmful gases. Numerous public modes of transport are available to people around the world and yet we see plenty of personal vehicles on the roads which increase the carbon footprint of a city and also play a major role in global warming and climate change.

Further, it is a matter of deep concern that the growth in the number of road accidents, injuries, and fatalities has increased in recent years. It recognizes that road accidents have now become a major public health issue, and the victims are mainly the poor and vulnerable road users.

UK Chakma, Secretary, Transport department graced the occasion as chief guest of honour. He mentioned the initiative of government of Tripura towards setting up an Institute of Driving Training and Research (IDTR) at Jirania, West Tripura to promote road safety and skilled driving in Tripura. The special speaker of the program Dr. Manish Pal, Professor in Transportation Engineering, NIT Agartala, spoke on ‘Delay and Noise at different intersections in Agartala city’.

Another special speaker, Er. Rabijit Majumder, Manager, National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd. (NHIDCL), discussed ‘Road Safety – An issue of Concern for National Highways’. The program was presided over by Dr. Subhadeep Bhattacharjee, Chairman of the Institution of Engineers (India), Tripura State Centre. Dr. Mrinal Kanti Deb Barma, Honorary Secretary of the Center, delivered the welcome address on this occasion.
