Agartala, November 11: The residents of Dharmanagar have expressed their happiness over the opening of four onion counters by the Municipal Council at the Dharmanagar supermarket from Saturday. The counters are selling onion at the rate of Rs 55 per kg, which is much lower than the market price of Rs 70 per kg. The initiative was taken by the Municipal Council in response to the appeal of the journalists of Dharmanagar, who requested the chairman of the Municipal Council, Pradyut Dey Sarkar, and the district administrator, Debapriya Bardhan, to control the price of onion, which is a daily essential commodity.
The four onion counters were inaugurated by the chairman of the Municipal Council, Pradyut Dey Sarkar, in the presence of the chief executive officer, Vivek HK, the engineer, Shiv Shankar Roy, and other councilors of the Municipal Council.
The chairman said that the Municipal Council has taken this step to provide relief to the common people, who are facing difficulties due to the high price of onion in the market. He said that the Municipal Council has procured onion from the government at a subsidized rate and is selling it to the people at a nominal profit. He said that the Municipal Council will continue to sell onion at this rate until the market price comes down.
The people of Dharmanagar have welcomed the opening of the onion counters and thanked the Municipal Council for its initiative. They said that the onion counters have helped them to save money and buy onion at an affordable rate. They also appreciated the role of the journalists of Dharmanagar, who raised the issue of the onion price hike and urged the authorities to intervene. They said that the onion counters have created an atmosphere of happiness among the people.
