TGEF stage protest, demand pay hike and other benefits

Agartala, January 07: Hundreds of government employees under the banner of Tripura Government Employees Federation (TGEF) staged a protest at the post office Chowmuhani in Agartala on Sunday, demanding immediate payment of outstanding 26 percent dearness allowance, payment of salary allowances to the teaching staff as per the recommendations of the 7th Central Pay Commission, introduction of regular pay scale to all irregular employees, filling up of vacant posts in various departments, and other benefits.

The protest was led by TGEF president Shanti Ranjan Debnath, general secretary Pradip Bhowmik, and other leaders of the organization. They addressed the gathering and highlighted the various demands of the government employees, who they claimed were getting the lowest salary in the country. They said that they would submit a memorandum of their 14-point demand to the government and hold a four-hour mass demonstration on the same day.

The TGEF leaders accused the BJP-led government of betraying the employees, who had supported the party in the 2018 assembly elections. They said that before the elections, the BJP leadership, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, had promised to implement the 7th pay commission for the state employees after coming to power. However, even after three years of forming the government, the state employees are still lagging behind the central employees in dearness allowances by about 26 percent. They also alleged that the government was not allowing the employees to agitate for their rights and was suppressing their voice. The TGEF leaders said that they were not satisfied with the government’s response to their demands and would continue their agitation until their demands were met.
