Agartala, 8th January 2024: As of now, 47.584 kilometers in Tripura remain unfenced with Bangladesh due to various reasons, including for obstruction from the Border Guards of Bangladesh (BGB).
On the second day of the Tripura Legislative Assembly, CPIM and TIPRA Motha MLAs Nayan Sarkar and Ranjit Debbarma raised this concern.
A report from the Home Department states that in six districts of the state, including Unakoti, Khowai, North Tripura, Sepahijala, Dhalai, and South Tripura, certain patches still lack fencing with neighboring Bangladesh.
In Unakoti, 65 meters remain unfenced due to the Land Custom Station and obstruction by the BGB. In Khowai District, 405 meters lack fencing due to water flow in the riverine. In North Tripura District, 400 meters are unfenced due to a high cliff. In Sepahijala District, which shares the majority of the international border with Bangladesh, a 6.556 km-long area is still unfenced, as the work has recently commenced. In Dhalai, 37.610 km remains unfenced due to various reasons such as engineering goods movement, heavy goods vehicle traffic in areas of incomplete border fencing due to road renovation, international agreements, and in some parts, due to the water flow of the Dhalai River. In South Tripura, approximately 2.548 km still lacks fencing, as the construction of fencing has begun after the acquisition of land in some parts of Belonia sub-division, and work has paused for the construction of a gate at Dashmighat in Sabroom.
“The concerned Ministry of the Central Government was formally notified in writing on 05/02/2021 by the Government of Tripura to complete the unfinished Border Fencing work. Subsequently, a review meeting took place in Agartala on 13/11/2021 in the presence of the Secretary of Border Management of the Central Government, addressing Border Fencing and other related issues. During the meeting, all agencies entrusted with the work were directed to expedite completion. Additionally, the state government regularly assesses the progress of the fencing work with the concerned agencies. However, the Tripura government has not received information from the central government regarding the expected completion date of the work.”
