Agartala, 1st March 2024:   A large number of local residents staged a sit-in protest outside the DWS office at Dharmanagar Nayapara on Friday morning, demanding the cancellation of the transfer order of SDO Sohail Ahmed, who has been instrumental in solving the long-standing drinking water problems in the area.

Sohail Ahmed took charge of the Dharmanagar DWS office as SDO about a month ago, after the demise of Subodh Dhar, the former SDPO of the office. In his short tenure, he has successfully addressed the water supply issues in several parts of Dharmanagar, including Kalachara, Katthaltila, Malakar Para, and Asit Samari. He has also initiated several development projects with his fast and efficient work.

However, he was recently ordered to be transferred to another location, allegedly due to the interference of Rajiv Pal, the Deputy Secretary of the Public Works Department, who wanted to halt the progress of Dharmanagar. This news sparked outrage among the people of Dharmanagar, who appreciated the work of Sohail Ahmed and wanted him to continue as SDO.

As a mark of protest, hundreds of people, along with some councilors of Dharmanagar, gathered outside the DRW office gate and blocked the entrance. They raised slogans against Rajiv Pal and the transfer order, and demanded that Sohail Ahmed should remain as SDO of Dharmanagar. They also threatened to launch a bigger agitation if their demand was not met.

The protest lasted for about two hours, until the police from Dharmanagar police station arrived at the scene. The police tried to pacify the crowd and asked them to disperse peacefully. However, the protesters refused to budge and insisted on their demand. The police then realized the gravity of the situation and left the spot without taking any action.

The protesters said that they will not give up their fight until the transfer order of Sohail Ahmed is revoked. They also expressed their gratitude to Sohail Ahmed for his service to Dharmanagar and hoped that he will stay as SDO. They said that Sohail Ahmed is the best SDO that Dharmanagar has ever had and that he deserves to be respected and supported.
