Delhi Fire: PM announces ex-gratia

 After a tragic fire claimed the lives of 6 newborns in Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday announced assistance for the families of each bereaved, and Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena directed the Chief Secretary to institute an inquiry.

In a social media post, the PMO said, “In the wake of the fire tragedy at a hospital in Delhi, the Prime Minister has announced that an ex gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. Rs. 50,000 would be given to each of those injured.”

Meanwhile, LG Saxena said, “I have asked the Chief Secretary to institute an inquiry into the tragic incidents of fire in a children’s hospital in Delhi.”

He further instructed the Commissioner of Police to ensure all that is needed.

”My heartfelt condolences to bereaved families. I assure all relief & will ensure that guilty are brought to book,” Saxena added.

Terming the tragedy as heart-wrenching, President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal among others expressed condolences over this tragic incident.

The news of the death of many children due to a fire in a hospital in Vivek Vihar, Delhi is heart-rending, the President said adding, “May God give strength to the bereaved parents and relatives to bear this shock.”

She further prayed for the speedy recovery of other children injured in this incident.

Meanwhile, Dhankar said, “Extremely distressed by the loss of lives of newborn children at a hospital in New Delhi today. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members in this hour of grief. May the injured recover soon.”

“The fire tragedy at a hospital in Delhi is heart-rending. My thoughts are with the bereaved families in this incredibly difficult time. I pray that those injured recover at the earliest.,” PM tweeted.

“This incident of fire in a children’s hospital is heartbreaking. We all stand with those who lost their innocent children in this accident,” Kejriwal said.

He further added, “The causes of the incident will be investigated and whoever is responsible for this negligence will not be spared.”

As many as 6 newborns were killed, one is in critical condition and 5 others are undergoing treatment after a massive fire broke out at a baby care newborn hospital in the Vivek Vihar area of East Delhi Saturday night.

“The Fire department received a call at around 11:32 PM last night about the fire incident at the hospital and immediately dispatched nine fire tenders to the spot,” DFS Director Atul Garg told UNI.

“A total of 12 newborns were rescued, out of which 6 have died, 1 baby is serious and 5 others are undergoing treatment,” he said.

The fire was extinguished after nearly 3-4 hours, an official said.

As per some reports, the cause of the fire was multiple oxygen cylinder blasts. However, the officials have not ascertained the cause of the fire yet.

The rescue operation is still underway.
