CITU protests against anti-labour policies: demands 12-point action from state government

Agartala, 10th July 2024:   The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) state committee took to the streets on Wednesday voicing their strong opposition to the anti-labour policies implemented by both the central and state governments. The organization presented a comprehensive 12-point list of demands to the state government during a spirited procession that wound its way through the city’s roads, culminating in a meeting at Orient Chowmuhani.

CITU State President Manik Dey minced no words in condemning the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government. “This government, is unequivocally anti-labour,” he asserted. Dey highlighted the government’s relentless pursuit of policies detrimental to workers’ rights. “Under the guise of contract work,” he lamented, “people are being subjected to grueling hours without receiving their rightful dues.”

The ERU (Employee Rights Union) joined forces with CITU in this protest, amplifying the call for justice. Dey further criticized the delay in salary disbursement for various categories of workers, including Anganwadi employees and Asha workers. “Despite their tireless efforts,” he emphasized, “these workers are left waiting for their wages.”

The Supreme Court’s ruling on co-salary payments in cooperatives has fallen on deaf ears within the state government. “Fair wages,” Dey asserted, “remain elusive due to non-compliance with the court’s verdict.”

Beyond labour issues, Dey also raised concerns about the BJP government’s economic policies. “Government assets are being sold off,” he warned, “and the rising cost of goods is burdening citizens daily.” He concluded by demanding the scrapping of the new pension scheme in favor of reinstating the old one.
