Agartala, 12th July 2024:  Residents of Usha Bazar in Agartala staged a protest outside the West District and Sessions Judge Court, calling for the capital punishment of Raju Barman, the main suspect in the high-profile murder of Durga Prasanna Deb. Deb, known as Vicky, was the secretary of the prestigious Bharat Ratna Sangha club in Usha Bazar and was shot dead at point-blank range on April 30.

Following the murder, police arrested seven individuals, including former club president Pradyut Dhar Chowdhury, Sushmita Sarkar, Uma Sarkar, Birchakra Ghosh, Sani Saha, Sandip Kar, and Rakesh Barman. Ghosh, Kar, and Rakesh Barman were apprehended in Kolkata.

On Wednesday, Tripura Police captured Raju Barman, the prime accused, in Guwahati and brought him to Agartala on Thursday evening. Today, he was presented before the West District and Sessions Judge Court, where police requested a 10-day remand for further investigation.

The court premises saw a gathering of protestors, including the widow of Durga Prasanna Deb, who demanded justice. “We want his capital punishment. He should not get bail. When Durga Prasanna was alive, Raju Barman threatened him numerous times with a pistol. I want his capital punishment. If he gets bail, many more will die,” she stated.

Biswajit Das, a local resident, echoed her sentiments: “We have come here from Usha Bazar. Raju Barman and his group killed our former Bharat Ratna Sangha club secretary, Durga Prasanna Deb. We urge the Home Minister and Chief Minister, Prof. Dr. Manik Saha, to take action to prevent further violence.” The case continues to unfold as the community demands swift and severe justice.
