Agartala, 16th July 2024: Within less than 24 hours after a four-member delegation including Minister Tinku Roy returned from the Ganda Twisa sub-division, two shops were engulfed in flames late at night. The situation remains tense as unrest continues to grip the area.
The turmoil in Ganda Twisa began with a tragic incident at the Ananda Mela (a local fair) where a youth named Parameshwar Reang lost his life due to a fight. His demise sparked outrage among the common people leading to widespread unrest. The flames of discontent spread rapidly, consuming several houses, livestock and livelihoods.
The working-class people are deeply affected by the chaos, raised their voices in anguish. Minister Tinku Roy, part of the visiting delegation listened to their heart-rending stories. “The working-class people are now on the streets,” he acknowledged. “This is their manifestation.”
Minister Roy clarified that the delegation arrived two days after the initial incident, acting on the Chief Minister’s instructions. Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha closely monitors the situation. Urgent compensation orders have been issued, with officials directed to pay 25 percent of the compensation within two days. The District Magistrate and Revenue Department are actively working to address the crisis.
Despite these efforts, tragedy struck again. Within 24 hours of the delegation’s return, two shops were gutted in another fire. Firefighters responded promptly, preventing further damage. However, the loss amounted to approximately Rs 27 lakh. Fire department personnel lamented the lack of sufficient water supply.
Security forces and police personnel are now patrolling the area to prevent gatherings. The administration has urged restraint during this calamitous period. District Magistrate Saju Vaheed A confirmed that the recent fire resulted from a short circuit. He appealed to citizens not to spread unnecessary rumors on social media.
The situation remains under control, but the scars of unrest persist in Ganda Twisa sub-division.
