Agartala, 17th July 2024: In a decisive move to combat illegal activities, the state government on Wednesday demolished the renowned Bharat Ratna Sangha Club, located at Usha Bazar on the outskirts of Agartala. The action was taken following allegations that the club and its members were involved in criminal activities such as land encroachment, smuggling, and illicit tender negotiations.
West District Magistrate Dr. Vishal Kumar, told reporters that the club had been established on government land. “After proper demarcation and following all legal procedures, we demolished the structure to make way for future projects, including a Primary Health Care center,” Dr. Kumar stated. He emphasized that the government’s action was part of its zero-tolerance policy towards criminal activities and land encroachment.
Despite the club’s history of contributing positively to society, recent investigations revealed that some of its members were engaged in serious crimes. “We initially supported the club’s social work, but with the discovery of illegal activities involving both old and new members, we had to take strict action,” Dr. Kumar added. The government plans to utilize the reclaimed one-acre land for community benefits, such as establishing a Primary Health Care center.
The club had previously been embroiled in a high-profile murder case. On April 30, former club secretary Durga Prasanna Deb, also known as Vicky, was killed at point-blank range due to personal enmity.
