Agartala, 2nd October 2024: In a startling incident early on Wednesday morning, a youth attempted to attack a police officer on duty on National Highway 108B. The incident took place at around 7 AM leading to the immediate arrest of the accused identified as Uday Bhowmik.
The police under the leadership of Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sahadeb Das of Lefunga Police Station had set up a checkpoint at Fatikcherra on National Highway 108B from around 3 PM the previous day. This operation was part of a larger effort to manage traffic and ensure safety during the Mahalaya festivities, following a vehicle accident earlier in the day.
During the operation, the second officer Abhirup Das was assaulted by Bhowmik, who also misbehaved with other officers on duty. The police swiftly arrested Bhowmik and took him to the Lefunga Police Station.
OC Sahadeb Das stated that the checkpoint led to the seizure of numerous bikes for violations of the Motor Vehicle Act. He assured that legal action would be taken against all offenders.
The increasing number of vehicle accidents on National Highway 108B has been a growing concern. However, the local community has praised the police’s proactive measures during Mahalaya, despite some youths’ refusal to comply with the law.
