Agartala, 29th June 2025 : Following a spike in water-borne illnesses in the Master Para area of Agartala, the West Tripura District administration has imposed restrictions on the use of drinking water from underground tanks and household sources. District Magistrate Dr. Vishal Kumar on Sunday visited the affected locality to assess the situation and oversee immediate response measures.
Dr. Kumar said that complaints of illness, including fever, dark yellow urine, and symptoms resembling hepatitis—especially in children—have been reported since June 22. So far, around 70 people have shown symptoms, with 10 currently undergoing treatment.
“Residents have raised concerns about the quality of drinking water. In response, instructions have been issued to the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) and the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DWS) to inspect household water sources and carry out a detailed survey of the water pipeline network,” the DM informed reporters.
He said any old or damaged pipelines must be identified and replaced to prevent contamination. Additionally, construction workers have been directed not to damage pipelines during ongoing drain work to avoid the risk of sewage mixing with potable water.
The Chief Medical Officer’s office has advised residents to boil water before consumption for the next 15 days as a precautionary measure. Health surveys are currently being conducted in the area. “Two water samples tested earlier returned negative results, but fresh samples are now being collected from underground tanks and household sources for further analysis,” Dr. Kumar added.
While the situation remains under control, the DM stressed that strict surveillance is in place. “There is no epidemic situation, but we are taking every possible precaution,” he assured.
