Agartala, 5th April 2025: A 14-month-old baby, Anuj Debbarma, tragically passed away at the Teliamura Sub-division Hospital yesterday night, with serious allegations of medical negligence casting a dark shadow over the hospital’s functioning.
According to the bereaved father, Bishwajit Debbarma, the child was referred to Teliamura from Ampi Nagar Hospital around 8:15 PM after he began suffering from severe respiratory distress. Upon arrival, Anuj was reportedly kept waiting for nearly an hour under the supervision of medicine specialist Dr. Uttam Kumar Barman, without receiving any immediate or effective treatment.
Shockingly, despite the presence of two pediatricians at the hospital—Dr. Pranoy Das and Dr. Sukanya Das—Dr. Barman allegedly did not consider it necessary to consult either specialist for the child’s treatment. As a result, the infant’s condition continued to worsen. Although a decision was eventually made to refer him to GB Pant Hospital in Agartala, the family could not arrange the transfer due to financial constraints. The child died while undergoing treatment at Teliamura.
The incident took an even more disturbing turn after several hospital staff members claimed that the doctor arranged to send the child’s body home just ten minutes before the arrival of local journalists—raising further suspicions around the circumstances of the death.
Locals have also raised concerns about the general conduct of pediatric services at the hospital. One of the pediatricians, Dr. Pranoy Das, reportedly resides within the hospital quarters, while the other, Dr. Sukanya Das, allegedly maintains irregular attendance and has been seen providing paid consultations at a nearby drugstore during off-hours.
The doctor on duty, however, maintained that the child was brought in with serious respiratory problems and was treated promptly as per protocol. He claimed pediatricians were consulted when the child’s condition deteriorated further.
The death has sparked widespread outrage among the local population, prompting calls for accountability and urgent intervention. All eyes are now on Teliamura MLA Kalyani Saha Roy, as the public awaits a decisive response and tangible measures to improve the state of healthcare in the region.
