Agartala, 14th August 2024:  The border between India and Bangladesh remains tense due to ongoing unrest in Bangladesh. Despite stringent border security measures, infiltration continues unabated.

On Monday afternoon, the Agartala GRP police received intelligence that a group of Bangladeshi nationals might attempt to cross into the state via the Agartala railway station. Acting swiftly on this information, the police, with the assistance of RPF jawans, positioned themselves at the station entrance.

“Upon receiving the tip-off, we immediately set up a checkpoint at the railway station,” said a senior police official.

Shortly thereafter, a group of Bangladeshi nationals began entering the station. The police quickly surrounded and interrogated them. Initially, the individuals denied any wrongdoing but later admitted to having illegally entered Indian territory. “They confessed to crossing the border from Sidhai Mohanpur through the Sabroom border,” the official added.

The detainees included three Bangladeshi human traffickers, three women, and a child. They were attempting to travel abroad by rail. The police have filed cases against them under specific sections and have launched a thorough investigation into the incident.

“In the past few days, approximately 250 Bangladeshi citizens have illegally entered India through the Tripura border,” the police revealed. “We have arrested them, but the laxity in border security is evident. Otherwise, 16 Bangladeshi nationals could not have entered India under the current circumstances.”

The situation underscores the ongoing challenges in maintaining border security amid regional instability.
