Agartala, 24th March 2025: Seeking alternative housing arrangements, 19 families residing on Khas land in Ward No. 36 of the Jaipur area, who recently received eviction notices, submitted a deputation to the Sadar Sub-Divisional Magistrate.
The ambitious Riverfront Development Project along the banks of the Howrah River in Agartala is progressing rapidly. The project aims to enhance both sides of the river with amenities such as a gym, an amusement park, and dedicated spaces for morning walks.
However, the development has triggered an eviction crisis for 19 families who have been living on Khas land in Ward No. 36 for the past 30 to 40 years. The Sadar Sub-Divisional Administration recently served them eviction notices, instructing them to vacate the area by March 27.
Following the notice, the affected families visited the Sadar Sub-Divisional Office on Monday to appeal for a solution. Many of them, primarily daily wage laborers, expressed their inability to relocate due to financial constraints.
“We have been living here for decades. This is our only shelter, and we don’t have the resources to buy land elsewhere,” said one of the residents.
The families stated that they are willing to vacate if the administration provides them with alternative rehabilitation arrangements. However, in the absence of such provisions, they have vowed to resist eviction, even at the cost of their lives.
