Agartala, March 23: In a shocking incident at the Bairagimura Anganwadi Center under Melaghar Police Station, two young girls, Pangti Debbarma, aged five, and Hamari Debbarma, aged five and a half, suffered severe burns when hot water accidentally spilled on them. The incident occurred last Wednesday when the girls were playing at the center.
The hot water was reportedly poured out by Anganwadi Center worker Jayalkshi Sarkar Debbarma. One of the girls lost consciousness immediately after the scalding water hit her body, while the other began to scream in pain. Upon hearing the commotion, locals rushed to the center and pressured the workers, Jayalakshmi Sarkar Debvarma and her associate Kanchanmala Debvarma, to take the injured girls to the hospital.
The girls were initially taken to Melaghar Hospital, where they received preliminary treatment. However, due to the severity of their burns, they were referred to GB Hospital for better treatment the following day, Thursday.
Union State Minister Pratima Bhowmik visited the girls at GB Hospital, where she inquired about their condition from the attending doctors. She also assured that assistance would be provided for sending the girls abroad for further treatment, if necessary.
The incident has raised serious concerns about the safety measures in place at Anganwadi Centers and the level of responsibility exhibited by the workers. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
