Agartala, 15th June 2026: The Tripura Commission for Woman has come forward to support 80-year-old Roshnara Begum, a helpless elderly woman living in extreme poverty at Luntaichhara under the Golaghati assembly constituency and Jampuijala RD Block.
Roshnara Begum has reportedly been living since 2000 in a fragile hut constructed on government khas land beside the Agartala-Sabroom National Highway. Despite spending decades in hardship, she has allegedly not received any government assistance or welfare benefits till date.
Local sources informed that, Roshnara’s husband passed away several years ago. She has a son and a daughter, while her son works in private households to somehow maintain his wife, children, and elderly mother. However, the family continues to struggle with severe financial difficulties.
The family claims that they have been deprived of basic facilities, including electricity, social allowance, a house under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, and even a toilet. They alleged that despite repeated hardships, neither government officials nor local representatives have taken effective steps to help them.
Roshnara Begum had reportedly submitted an application for an old-age pension to the Sepahijala District Magistrate in 2023, but no allowance was sanctioned even after a considerable period.
After reports about the family’s condition came to light, the State Women’s Commission took notice of the matter. On Monday afternoon, a delegation led by Commission Chairperson Jharna Debbarma visited Roshnara Begum’s residence.
During the visit, the Commission members witnessed the poor condition of the house. The roof was full of holes, rainwater entered the room during showers, and the family was living without electricity.
After inspecting the situation, Chairperson Jharna Debbarma assured Roshnara Begum and her family that necessary steps would be taken to ensure they receive government benefits. The Commission has also sent a letter to the Sepahijala District Magistrate regarding the elderly woman’s allowance and other required support.
The visit has brought fresh hope to the family, who have been waiting for government assistance for years.
