Agartala, 30th July 2024:   In a severe blow to the agricultural sector, the state is grappling with an acute water irrigation crisis leaving farmers failing to plant ‘Aman’ rice. The situation prompted a delegation from the All India Krishak Sabha state committee to submit a memorandum to the Chief Engineer of the Public Works Department (Water Resources), urgently demanding a solution.

The delegation led by state secretary Pabitra Kar highlighted the gravity of the situation. “The month of Shravan (Bengali Calendar) is crucial for planting ‘Aman’ rice. This year, due to the lack of rain, over 70% of ‘Aman’ rice has not been planted,” Kar stated.

He further explained that the All India Krishak Sabha state committee brought this issue to the attention of the Irrigation department. The memorandum demands that the irrigation problem be resolved within 15 days to ensure water supply for the crops. Failure to address the issue would force farmers to buy rice from the market in the near future.

The Chief Engineer assured the delegation that the matter would be taken seriously and efforts would be made to resolve the crisis. Among the delegation were organization leader Ratan Das and several other representatives, all united in their plea for immediate action.
