Agartala, 31st May 2024: – In a significant move to improve infrastructure, Agartala Municipal Corporation has demolished several shops and houses to widen the road from Siddhi Ashram to Agartala railway station. The demolition operation, conducted on Friday, was part of a larger project undertaken by the works department to enhance road connectivity in the region.
Despite prior notices and compensation provided to the affected residents and shop owners, many had not vacated the land, leading to the forced demolition. Commissioner Shailesh Kumar Yadav of Agartala Municipal Corporation detailed the situation, stating that the project had faced considerable resistance from local inhabitants, even though notices were issued and compensation was paid to facilitate the public road expansion.
The demolition process commenced early in the morning with the deployment of bull dredges by the task force of AMC. Officials from AMC, along with police and paramilitary forces, were present to ensure the operation proceeded smoothly.
Commissioner Yadav emphasized the necessity of the demolition to move forward with the road-widening project, which is crucial for easing traffic congestion and improving transportation links to the railway station.
Despite the potential for unrest, the demolition campaign proceeded without any reported incidents of violence or disruption.
