Agartala, 2nd May 2026: The vital Assam–Tripura National Highway-8 has deteriorated into a perilous death trap this monsoon, leaving commuters and transporters in extreme distress. Heavy rainfall has worsened the already fragile condition of the road, particularly in the Lowarpoah stretch, where traffic has been paralyzed for hours.
Since yesterday afternoon, a 16-wheeler truck became fatally stuck on the highway at Lowarpoah, triggering massive congestion on both ends. More than 200 vehicles remained stranded for hours, while no responsible officials from the construction company were seen at the site, sparking outrage among locals and drivers.
Residents allege that negligence by the construction agency has compounded the crisis. With the Lowairpoa–Hatikhira bypass closed due to Bharatmala project work, heavy vehicles are being diverted through the narrow and fragile Lowairpoa market road. The constant pressure has quickly reduced the road to a dangerous state, forcing commuters to risk their lives daily.
Locals recall that the construction company had earlier promised swift repairs, but no visible action has followed. Instead, the situation has worsened, with authorities accused of indifference. The pressing questions now are how stranded vehicles will be rescued from this treacherous stretch, and when normal traffic flow will be restored. For now, the public continues to wait anxiously for answers.
