Agartala, 20th April 2025: Two Bangladeshi nationals were apprehended and assaulted by residents of Nandalal Das Para in Ishanpur Gram Panchayat, under the Mohanpur sub-division of Tripura’s West district, after being caught allegedly attempting a theft. The village lies close to the India-Bangladesh international border.
According to local sources, the region has been grappling with frequent cross-border thefts. Miscreants often take advantage of dense vegetation and nightfall to infiltrate Indian territory, commit theft, and flee back across the border undetected.
On the morning of April 20, a local farmer spotted three unidentified men near a forested patch adjacent to his vegetable farm. Suspicious of their movements, he raised an alarm, prompting other villagers to gather and cordon off the area. The Border Security Force (BSF) was also alerted.
While the villagers managed to intercept all three suspects, one reportedly escaped and fled back into Bangladesh through a gap in the barbed wire fencing. The remaining two were caught, beaten by the crowd, and later handed over to the BSF.
Sources said burglary tools, including hand axes and a star-cutting machine, were recovered from their possession.
A senior BSF official confirmed the incident. “Two Bangladeshi nationals were detained by locals and were found to have been badly beaten. As no stolen items were recovered from them, we are initiating the process to hand them over to the Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB),” the official said.
