Agartala, 11th June 2025 :   The annual bathing procession of Lord Jagannath, known as Snan Yatra is being observed with devotion and enthusiasm across the country, including Tripura. In Agartala, the grand celebrations are underway at the Jagannath Temple and ISKCON Temple, where a large gathering of devotees has assembled to witness the auspicious occasion.

The rituals began early in the morning, with temple priests performing sacred ceremonies. As per tradition, Lord Jagannath, followed by Balaram and Subhadra, was adorned with garlands before being taken to the bathing altar. After the holy bath, Lord Jagannath will be dressed in Gajanan attire, signifying a special divine appearance.

Snan Yatra holds immense significance in Jagannath worship, marking the day when the deity undergoes an elaborate ritual bath alongside his siblings. The occasion is also regarded as Lord Jagannath’s birthday. In Puri, the original seat of Jagannath worship, it is believed that after the ceremonial bath, the deity falls ill. Consequently, the doors of the Jagannath temple remain closed to devotees for 15 days. When Lord Jagannath recovers, the temple reopens, coinciding with the grand Lob Kalevar festival.

Following this period, the much-awaited Rath Yatra is scheduled for June 27, during which Lord Jagannath, Balaram and Subhadra will embark on a chariot journey to their aunt’s residence.

Our Bishalgarh correspondent added: On the auspicious full moon day of the month of Jyeshtha, the sacred Snan Yatra of Lord Jagannath was held at the historic Jagannath Bari in Melaghar. Alongside, the chariot was ceremonially sealed. Melaghar hosts the largest Rath Yatra festival in Northeast India. Following today’s Snan Yatra, Lord Jagabandhu, along with Balaram and Subhadra, will remain in the sanctum for nearly 15 days, during which devotees will not be able to see them. On the day of the Rath Yatra, Lord Jagannath will reunite with his devotees. From Wednesday morning, devotees gathered at Jagannath Bari for the Snan Yatra, participating in prayers and rituals, including offering puja to the chariot wheels.
