Agartala, 7th June 2025: Tension gripped the Pakhipara area under Gandacherra subdivision last night following a violent clash between IPFT and TIPRA Motha party workers. One person was injured and the house of a TIPRA Motha supporter was vandalized in the incident triggering panic in the region.
According to police sources, a group of 30 to 40 IPFT workers allegedly attacked the residence of Abhichandra Tripura, a TIPRA Motha worker around 9 PM yesterday. “They vandalized his Alto car, a scooty, the tin boundary and the fencing of the house,” a local resident said.
In retaliation, TIPRA Motha supporters reportedly beat up a local IPFT worker, who was later admitted to the sub-district hospital around 10 PM.
The conflict reportedly stemmed from a dispute over the appointment of workers for a panchayat-level NREGA contractor project. “Both parties had earlier agreed to appoint five workers each, but TIPRA Motha objected to the inclusion of five IPFT members arguing the party has no active organization in the area,” said a source close to the matter.
The situation escalated after alleged use of abusive language by TIPRA Motha workers against IPFT leaders leading to the attack on Abhichandra Tripura’s house. A police team led by Sub-Divisional Police Officer Saugata Chakma and Gandacherra OC Asim Sarkar reached the spot and brought the situation under control.
Today, TIPRA Motha filed a complaint with Gandacherra police station naming nine IPFT members, while the IPFT lodged a counter-case against eight TIPRA Motha workers.
A peace meeting was convened by Sub-Divisional Magistrate Chandra Joy Reang at the Revenue Dak Bunglow. While IPFT leaders attended, Tipra Motha leaders remained absent demanding arrests first.
EM Rajesh Tripura and MLA Nandita Reang Debbarma visited the police station and warned, “If the attackers are not arrested by this night, we will launch a larger movement from tomorrow. The administration will be held responsible.”
Meanwhile, a local journalist Subrata Das sustained injuries while covering the violent clash at Pakhipara area last night. Condemning the incident, a delegation from the Journalists Association of Tripura met SDPO Saugata Chakma today and demanded strict action against those responsible for the attack. Police have assured a thorough investigation into the matter.
Heavy police deployment continues in the area to prevent further escalation.
