CPIM stages protest at Melaghar police station, demands arrest of prime accused in minor’s rape case

Date:

Agartala, 26th June 2026:  The Melaghar West and Urmai local committees of the CPI(M) staged a protest march and deputation program on Friday, demanding the immediate arrest and strict punishment of Pintu Ranjan Ghosh, the prime accused in the rape of a minor girl under the jurisdiction of Melaghar Police Station.

The procession began at the CPI(M) party office in Melaghar and culminated at the police station, where a seven-member delegation submitted a memorandum. According to reports, the victim’s mother worked at the residence of the accused, and the girl often accompanied her. Exploiting this situation, Ghosh allegedly subjected the minor to repeated sexual assault over two years, using blackmail to silence her.

CPI(M) leaders demanded exemplary punishment for the accused and urged the administration to adopt stricter measures to prevent such crimes. Ratan Das, member of the Sonamura Sub-divisional Secretariat, stated that violence against women is rampant across the state, with many offenders escaping severe punishment through legal loopholes or financial influence. He warned that if their demands are not met, the party would intensify its movement.

As the Officer-in-Charge was absent, the deputation was handed to the duty officer. Police officials confirmed that two accused have already been arrested in connection with the case and assured that efforts are underway to apprehend the prime accused soon.
