Agartala, 16th November 2024 :   A young housewife named Aklima Akhter was rescued from her in-laws’ home at Telkajla Bardhepa area in Melaghar after enduring alleged abuse from her father-in-law and mother-in-law. The rescue operation was carried out by her family with the assistance of Melaghar police station.

Aklima Akhter was married Nur Alam one and a half years back, has a daughter with him. She alleges that her mother-in-law Shefali Begum has been verbally abusing her with vulgar language primarily due to her dark complexion. “Shefali Begum never liked me because of my skin color. She always said she could have found a more beautiful girl for her son,” Aklima stated.

Despite the dowry given at the time of marriage, Aklima claims that her mother-in-law’s behavior has been consistently abusive. “My father-in-law also treats me badly, but my mother-in-law is worse,” she added. Aklima had been enduring the abuse silently for the sake of her husband and child.

The situation escalated when a minor argument between Aklima and Shefali Begum led to the mother-in-law attacking her with a broom. When Nur Alam returned home from the market and was informed about the incident, he allegedly slapped Aklima twice and attempted to attack her again. Fearing for her safety, Aklima fled to a neighbor’s house.

Upon hearing about the incident, Aklima’s family from Radhanagar came to her rescue. They along with the help of Melaghar police brought Aklima and her daughter to the police station. “The abuse was becoming unbearable. I had to leave for the sake of my daughter and myself,” Aklima said.

Currently, Aklima is staying at her father’s house. The local people in Telkajla Bardhepa has expressed mixed reactions, with many stating that while Nur Alam is generally considered a good person, his family members are not. “The husband’s family is not good at all. They have been mistreating Aklima since the beginning,” said a local resident.
