Agartala, 1st October 2024: A protest march was organized by the youth leaders of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) in Agartala city on Tuesday as citizens voiced their growing concerns over the deteriorating law and order situation in the state. Teachers, artists, journalists, doctors, and police officers are among those affected, with reports of rising mafia activity, extortion, and violence.
“The situation in Tripura has spiraled out of control. Day by day, the attacks are growing in intensity, and the common people are the ones paying the price,” a DYFI leader said during the protest. “Mafia terrorism and extortion have resurfaced, and the state is slipping into chaos,” he added.
Following the march, the protestors submitted a deputation to the Director General of Police (DGP), demanding immediate action to restore law and order. The protest comes in response to what the DYFI described as an “anarchic situation,” where members of various professions and opposition political workers face daily attacks.
“We are deeply concerned by the escalating violence in Tripura,” said another protestor. “The safety of students, young women, and women, in general, is at grave risk. In March 2020, a 22-year-old woman was raped and burned to death in Mohanpur, yet no justice has been served in that case. Such incidents only encourage criminals to act with impunity.”
The DYFI claims the lack of strict legal action against criminals has emboldened wrongdoers, further destabilizing the state’s already fragile law and order situation. “Criminals are flaunting the law, and the police seem powerless to stop them,” the protestor added.
Another issue highlighted during the protest was the rampant drug trade in the state, with reports of increasing addiction among the youth. “The streets are flooded with drugs, and thousands of families are being destroyed as a result,” said a protestor. “Despite this, there is little to no action against the drug dealers. Even the car that killed a police officer from Kamalchora police station, allegedly linked to drug dealers, has seen no accountability.”
Women leaders from the DYFI also joined the protest, calling for immediate measures to protect students, young women, and the public. “We demand the rule of law be re-established in Tripura, the safety of women ensured, the drug trade halted, and strict action taken against the dealers,” they stated.
The DYFI has vowed to continue its protests until the government takes decisive action to address the spiraling violence and lawlessness in the state.
