Eco-friendly Pest Management training empowers tribal farmers and farm women in West Tripura

Agartala, 2nd March 2025:   A three-day training program on the biological management of major insect pests in cabbage and tomato successfully concluded at ICAR-KVK, West Tripura. Organized jointly by the College of Fisheries, CAU, Lembucherra, and ICAR-KVK, West Tripura, the training benefited over 30 tribal farmers and farm women by equipping them with eco-friendly pest management techniques.

The programme was coordinated by Dr. Sawant Chandrakant G., Assistant Professor (Plant Protection), MTTC and VTC, College of Fisheries, CAU, Lembucherra, and Dr. Vinodakumar S. Naik, Assistant Professor, MTTC and VTC, College of Fisheries, CAU, Lembucherra. Eminent resource persons, including Dr. Sajal Debbarma, SMS (Horticulture), North Tripura KVK, Dr. Utpal Dey, SMS (Entomology), KVK Sephaijala, and Dr. Nagaraju M. C., SMS (Agricultural Entomology), KVK West Tripura, provided valuable insights into sustainable pest management.

The training sessions emphasized integrated pest management (IPM) strategies, focusing on biological control agents such as parasitoids, predators, and microbial bio-pesticides. Experts detailed pest identification, life cycles, and effective biological control measures to reduce reliance on chemical pesticides. Practical demonstrations and interactive discussions enabled farmers to grasp these techniques and integrate them into their farming practices.

Farmers actively participated in hands-on sessions and pledged to adopt these eco-friendly pest management methods to improve crop productivity and farm profitability. At the end of the programme, various bio-pesticides and pest control implements were distributed by the College of Fisheries, CAU, Lembucherra, to support farmers in implementing the learned techniques.

This initiative highlights the importance of collaboration between research institutions and farming communities in promoting sustainable agriculture. ICAR-KVK, West Tripura, remains committed to empowering farmers with scientific knowledge for better farm management and long-term agricultural sustainability.
