Agartala, 8th May 2026: An 88 year old woman Sandhya Rani Chakraborty broke down in tears while recounting her ordeal at Teliamura Sub Divisional Hospital. “I no longer have the strength in my body. That is why I had to leave the hospital silently, even after being insulted,” she said, her voice trembling.
According to her complaint, she had gone to the hospital seeking treatment for age related health problems. After waiting in line for a long time, she entered the doctor’s chamber to explain her condition. However, she alleged that before she could finish speaking, the attending physician Sub Divisional Medical Officer Raja Jamatia ordered her to leave in a harsh tone. She further claimed that she was scolded with insulting language.
Fighting back tears, Chakraborty told reporters outside the hospital premises, “I am not in a condition to argue. My body does not support me. So I had to walk away quietly. But if patients are treated like this, where will elderly people like us go? Patients expect sympathy, patience, and humane behavior from doctors. If instead we are humiliated, public trust in the healthcare system will collapse.”
Local residents have also alleged that similar complaints of misbehavior have been raised against Dr. Jamatia in the past. Some even claimed that patients are sometimes advised to visit his private chamber after traveling long distances to the hospital. These allegations, however, could not be independently verified.
Community members pointed out that the state health department and local MLA Kalyani Saha Roy have taken several initiatives to improve healthcare services in Teliamura. Yet, they argue, allegations of mismanagement and mistreatment inside the hospital undermine those efforts and raise serious questions about the system’s credibility.
