Agartala, 20th July 2024:  Three workers from the Power department were viciously attacked while on duty in South Kadamtala on Friday night. The incident has sent shockwaves through the Kadamtala Power office took place around 10 pm. Parendra Nath, Kashem Zakaria, and car driver Pritam Nath were addressing an electricity problem when they fell victim to an enraged crowd.

According to reports, the villagers first detained the workers before dragging them out of their vehicle and assaulting them. “We were just doing our job, trying to restore power, when they started beating us,” recounted Parendra Nath, one of the injured workers. “It was terrifying.”

Kashem Zakaria attempted to intervene and was also attacked. In the chaos, Pritam Nath, the car driver, was beaten, and the vehicle was vandalized. The situation was only defused when the Kadamtala police arrived and rescued the injured workers.

Dipayan Das, the manager of the Kadamtala sub-station, has filed a written complaint at the Kadamtala police station, naming the attackers. The police are now investigating the case to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The three injured workers were treated at the district hospital, with Parendra Nath suffering the most serious injuries and remaining under medical care. The workers expressed their frustration, citing multiple instances of harassment while working in the Kalaganger Par, Khadimpara, and Hafaitila areas.

“This is not the first time we’ve faced such hostility,” said one of the workers. “We are understaffed and overworked, especially during the monsoon season, and there is no intervention from the higher authorities.”

The Kadamtala Power Office, responsible for around twenty-two thousand consumers, operates with only eight workers, making their job increasingly difficult. The incident has highlighted the urgent need for better support and protection for these essential workers.

Local authorities are urged to address this issue promptly to ensure the safety and efficiency of the electricity supply in the area.
