Agartala, 7th May 2024: The Forum for Protection of Environment and Water Bodies of Tripura has written a letter to the West District Magistrate demanding immediate actions to maintain the depth of the Amrit Sarovar near Salbagan according the objective enshrined in the guidelines of Amrit Sarovar.
In a letter to West District Magistrate Dr Vishal Kumar, the President of the environment protection body Nikhil Debnath said that Mission Amrit Sarovar was launched by Prime Minister on the eve of National Panchayat Day on 24th April 2022 with an aim that Amrit Sarovars will play an important role in increasing the availability of water, both on surface and under-ground.
“Development of Amrit Sarovar is also an apt symbol of constructive actions, dedicated to the nation on the occasion of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, marking 75 years of the Independence from colonial rule, that create sustainable and long term productive assets, beneficial to both the sentient beings and environment. Each Amrit Sarovar will have pondage area of minimum of 1 acre (0.4 hectare) with water holding capacity of about 10,000 cubic meter i.e to hold 10,000 Cubic Meter of water in 1 acre (0.4 hectare) of land and the depth should be 2.4 meter”, the letter reads.
He further stated that unfortunately, it appears that the depth of the Amrit Sarovar in Sal Bagan, Agartala (near Oxygen Park), West Tripura will be at most three feet only.
“I would like to request you to kindly inquire into the matter and ensure the Objectives as written in the GUIDELINES on Mission Amrit Sarovar for all the Amrit Sarovars in your District”, he added.
