Eviction drive conducted along India–B’desh border to clear encroachments in Boxanagar

Date:

Agartala, 20th June 2026:   A large-scale eviction drive was carried out in the West Para area under Mid Boxanagar Gram Panchayat along the India–Bangladesh border to strengthen security arrangements and keep the land adjacent to the barbed wire fencing clear of encroachments.

According to officials, the district administration had earlier issued notices to several families residing on government land near the border fencing, instructing them to vacate the area within a specified deadline. The notices emphasized that structures built in the restricted zone near the international border must be removed in accordance with security regulations. However, as the directives were not complied with, authorities proceeded with a clearance operation on Saturday under heavy security.

From the afternoon, multiple security forces were deployed in the area, including police personnel, the Tripura State Rifles, the Central Reserve Police Force, and personnel from the Border Security Force (BSF). Senior administrative officials, including the Sub-Divisional Magistrate and other district officers, supervised the operation.

Officials stated that the clearance was necessary to ensure border security, maintain the integrity of the fencing system, and comply with international border management norms that require a buffer zone free of unauthorized settlements. During the operation, houses and other structures located close to the fencing were removed, and the area was cleared under official supervision.

The operation was also attended by BSF officials from the 49th Battalion’s Boxanagar Border Outpost, along with officers from local law enforcement agencies. Authorities confirmed that the entire drive was conducted peacefully with strict security arrangements in place to prevent any untoward incidents.

While the operation caused concern among some local residents, officials urged people to remain calm and cooperate with administrative directives. The district administration reiterated that maintaining border security and preventing unauthorized occupation of restricted zones is a legal requirement and will continue to be enforced strictly in the future.

Local residents, however, have expressed that rehabilitation measures for long-settled families in the border-adjacent areas should also be considered alongside enforcement actions.

Officials concluded that the eviction drive was part of ongoing efforts by civil administration and the BSF to ensure a secure and regulated border environment along the international boundary.
