Fishery College students protest after hit-and-run incident, demand justice

Agartala, 26th May 2025:   Students of the College of Fisheries staged a massive protest on the national highway in front of the Mohanpur Sub-Divisional Police Officer’s office today, demanding the immediate arrest of the accused involved in a recent hit-and-run incident. The demonstration led to a complete halt in traffic, causing severe inconvenience to commuters.

The protest erupted following the tragic accident on May 20, when PG second-year student D. Lingaraj Patra was critically injured after being struck by a speeding car near the college premises. Outraged by the lack of action against the perpetrator, more than a hundred students gathered in front of the Lembucherra police outpost blocking the main road and pressing for additional safety measures including the installation of barricades in front of the college.

The blockade resulted in disrupted travel between key regions, including Agartala, Mohanpur, Simna, Khowai and Kamalpur. Authorities scrambled to address the escalating unrest, with Mohanpur SDPO Sabyasachi Debnath, despite being on leave, attempting to mediate with the protestors only to find his efforts unsuccessful. Later, the Dean of Fishery College and other police officials arrived at the scene, assuring students that their concerns would be addressed.
