Agartala, 3rd June 2025: A five-day workshop titled “Road Safety Audit and Other Associated Safety Aspects” commenced yesterday at the School of Logistics, Waterways and Communication (SIPARD), Arundhati Nagar. The workshop is being organized in collaboration with the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), New Delhi and aims to address critical issues related to road safety.
The event was formally inaugurated by CRRI Director Prof. Manoranjan Parida at Hall No. 1 of SIPARD. In his inaugural speech, Prof. Parida emphasized, “Preventing road accidents requires both advanced technology and mass public awareness. Without these, our safety efforts will remain incomplete.”
Additional Commissioner of the State Transport department Subrata Chowdhury highlighted the proactive measures taken by the government. “Both Central and State governments are committed to reducing road accidents. Victims of road mishaps can avail up to Rs 1.5 lakh concession for treatment at any government hospital or health center,” he stated.
Dr. S. Velmurugan, Chief Scientist and Head of Department at CRRI, urged participating engineers and officials to apply the training from the workshop in real-life projects. “Understanding road safety audits is essential for saving lives. I encourage everyone to take this learning seriously,” he said.
Other speakers included Sushanta Datta, Chief Engineer of the School of Logistics and Dr. Elizabeth Sangliana, Head of the Research Wing of SIPARD. The workshop saw participation from engineers, architects, and officials from the state’s Public Works, Transport, and Traffic departments.
Meanwhile, a high-level meeting was convened at the Secretariat’s Conference Hall No. 1 in the afternoon. Senior scientists from CRRI, along with officials from departments such as Health, Works, Transport, Traffic, NHIDCL, and NIC, were present. The meeting focused on seeking CRRI’s continued technical guidance and support for awareness campaigns aimed at reducing road accidents.
Later in the day, the CRRI delegation also met with Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury. The Minister remarked, “We welcome CRRI’s expertise and request their active cooperation in strengthening road safety mechanisms and preventing accidents in our state.”
