Agartala, 3rd June 2025: The traditional cattle market in Boxnagar witnessed an overwhelming crowd yesterday as buyers and sellers gathered ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, fueling an upswing in livestock prices. Hosted in the field adjacent to Vidyajyoti XII Class School, the market saw over 4,000 to 5,000 cows and goats up for sale, with traders traveling from Sonamura subdivision and other parts of Tripura, while buyers arrived from districts including Agartala.
This year’s market generated heightened enthusiasm, with cattle prices surging significantly. Several cows were sold in the range of Rs 2 lakh to Rs 3 lakh, while the highest recorded sale peaked at Rs 5 lakh. However, some vendors reported that prices were slightly lower compared to the previous year, despite robust demand.
Beyond commercial activity, the market reflected a strong sense of communal harmony, drawing Hindu and Muslim buyers and traders alike. Notably, near the market, a kirtan was held at the Loknath temple creating a culturally inclusive environment.
Local leaders including Boxanagar MLA Tafajjal Hossain, RD Block BDO Sandip Pal, Mandal President Anil Chandra Saha and Panchayat Pradhan Bulti Sarkar Deb visited the venue assessing market arrangements. MLA Hossain emphasized the importance of this livestock market as a statewide tradition highlighting the peaceful coexistence of diverse communities. “This market is the biggest in Tripura, and Hindus and Muslims participating together demonstrate a shining example of harmony,” he said.
Security measures were visibly tightened, with authorities ensuring smooth operations through special youth teams formed for crowd management. As the state prepares for the holy Eid-ul-Azha celebrations on June 07, Boxanagar’s vibrant marketplace remains a testament to its enduring tradition and unity.
