Agartala, 14th July 2026 : Gomati District Hospital is poised for a major transformation with the addition of advanced medical facilities, including a cardiac care unit, MRI services and an additional 100-bed hospital, as part of the state government’s efforts to strengthen district-level healthcare infrastructure.
Health Secretary Kiran Gitte, during a visit to the hospital on Tuesday along with Director of Health Services Dr Debashree Debbarma, reviewed the existing facilities and ongoing development projects. He said the objective is to reduce the dependence of patients from Gomati and neighbouring South Tripura areas on Agartala for specialised treatment.
“Nearly 800 patients visit Gomati District Hospital every day, including many from South district. We want to ensure that people get quality healthcare services closer to their homes,” Gitte said.
He said several initiatives are underway to improve patient care, including the expansion of diagnostic services. The trauma centre has already been shifted to a new building, while efforts are being made to improve the availability of ultrasound services and reduce waiting periods.
The Health Secretary informed that a six-bed cardiac care unit has already been set up at the hospital and is likely to begin operations this week. The facility will provide immediate specialised care to cardiac patients and reduce the need for emergency referrals to Agartala.
He also announced that Gomati District Hospital will soon receive an MRI machine under a central government-supported programme. Tripura is expected to get three MRI machines through PM funds, with one earmarked for the Gomati facility.
Apart from advanced imaging services, the hospital is also expanding laboratory facilities. The existing lab is conducting nearly 150 types of tests, and preparations are underway to introduce biopsy testing services.
To meet the growing demand for healthcare services, the state government has planned an additional 100-bed hospital at the Gomati facility, with construction work expected to start soon.
The planned expansion is expected to significantly improve access to specialised medical care for residents of southern Tripura and strengthen Gomati District Hospital as a key healthcare centre in the region.
