Agartala, 5th January 2024: Chief Minister Prof Dr Manik Saha on Friday admitted that the state government-run general degree, professional colleges and diploma level technical institutes are facing a shortage of 289 faculty members, while 703 are in position. He was responding to a question raised by Congress MLA Gopal Chandra Roy on the first day of the 13th Assembly’s winter session in Agartala.
Dr Saha said that the Higher Education Department has taken various measures to address the issue of faculty shortage in colleges under its jurisdiction. He said that the department has recruited 103 assistant professors for general degree and professional colleges and 57 lecturers for diploma level technical institutes in different phases.
He also said that recently, the department has initiated the process of filling up 75 vacant posts of assistant professors in various subjects in government general degree colleges of Tripura. He added that the department has authorized the college authorities to engage guest lecturers for smooth running of the colleges for the academic year 2023-24. He said that 632 guest lecturers have been engaged by the colleges so far and more will be hired to ensure smooth academic activities.
Dr Saha further said that the total number of approved posts of teachers in all colleges under the department is 992 and the total number of persons in position is 703, leaving a vacancy of 289. He also informed that out of 25 higher educational institutions run by the government, nine general degree colleges have permanent principals.
