Heavy Rain Turns Agartala Streets Into Waterlogged Chaos; Daily Life Disrupted

Date:

Agartala, 28th April 2026:  Agartala city was brought to a standstill after just about an hour of continuous heavy rainfall led to widespread waterlogging across major areas. Several busy roads in the city were submerged under knee-deep water, severely disrupting normal life.

Commuters heading to offices, students attending schools and colleges, and local traders faced significant difficulties during the morning hours. Water accumulation in markets, main roads, and low-lying neighborhoods slowed down traffic movement and caused severe congestion in multiple locations. Pedestrians were seen wading through waterlogged streets to reach their destinations.

Residents have blamed the city’s poor drainage system, stating that even moderate rainfall exposes the long-standing infrastructural weaknesses. They also pointed out that despite claims of development under the “Smart City” initiative, the city continues to struggle with basic monsoon preparedness.

Meanwhile, the weather department has issued a forecast warning of thunderstorms accompanied by heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next three days. Gusty winds reaching speeds of 60–80 kmph are also expected in some areas. Authorities have said they are monitoring the situation, while calls for urgent drainage improvements continue to grow from various sections of the public.
