Heavy rainfall sparks chaos at Teliamura vegetable market, farmers protest over poor infrastructure

Agartala, 8th August 2025:   Days of relentless rainfall have left the agriculture-regulated wholesale vegetable market in Teliamura in disarray, triggering widespread frustration among farmers and buyers alike. The market, which typically draws farmers from various regions and buyers from across the state, was severely affected as waterlogging and mud rendered the premises nearly unusable.

On the scheduled wholesale market day, farmers arrived with their produce as usual, but within hours the situation deteriorated. The market grounds turned into a swamp, damaging large quantities of vegetables and other agricultural goods. Many farmers alleged they were unable to secure fair prices due to the market’s poor infrastructure and mismanagement.

Tensions escalated as farmers from different regions, irrespective of political affiliation staged a protest outside the Agriculture Produce Office, which operates under the Agriculture department. In a symbolic act of defiance, they locked the office demanding immediate intervention and accountability from market authorities.

Upon learning of the incident, agricultural supervisors and officials rushed to the site and engaged in dialogue with the aggrieved farmers. Officials assured them that steps would be taken to address the situation and prevent future disruptions.

While authorities are in the process of constructing a modern market shed, farmers argue that without alternative arrangements for those traveling from distant areas, the initiative is causing more harm than good. In a stern warning, they declared that unless proper measures are implemented, they would shift the vegetable market to the nearby national highway.

The incident has raised serious questions about the preparedness and responsiveness of the Teliamura Agriculture Market Committee. Whether the committee will take concrete steps to safeguard farmer interests in the wake of this protest remains to be seen.

After hours of disruption, the locked office was finally reopened following intervention by senior officials.
