Historic Medical Breakthrough at GBP Hospital: First Successful Uterine AVM Embolization in Tripura

Date:

Agartala, 21st  May 2026: In a landmark achievement for healthcare in Tripura, doctors at the AGMC & GBP Hospital have successfully performed the state’s first complex Uterine Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM) embolization, marking a major advancement in interventional medical care in the region.

A 38-year-old woman from Demchara in Dhalai district was admitted to the hospital with severe abdominal pain accompanied by excessive vaginal bleeding. Given the critical nature of her condition, Professor Dr. J. L. Baidya promptly coordinated with the Radiology and Cardiology teams to ensure rapid diagnosis and emergency intervention.

Following detailed evaluation, the medical team proceeded with a highly specialized catheter-based procedure. During the intervention, multiple coils were carefully deployed in the right uterine artery along with other feeding vessels supplying the AVM, successfully controlling the abnormal blood flow without the need for open surgery. The minimally invasive procedure was completed on May 15, 2026, over a span of nearly three hours.

The procedure was led by interventional cardiologist and Head of Department Dr. Anindya Sundar Trivedi, with assistance from cardiologists Dr. Rakesh Das and Dr. Manna Bhattacharya.

The anaesthesia team included Consultant Cardiac Anaesthetist Dr. Rimjhim Chakma and Consultant Anaesthetist Dr. Monimoy Debbarma. They were supported by a dedicated group from the Cardiology Department, including Dr. Samrat Das, Dr. Aristotle Tripura, Dr. Khamili Debbarma, and Dr. Debashis Reang.

Technical and procedural support was provided by Echo Technician Kishan Roy, Cath Lab nursing staff Debabrata Debnath, Pranakrishna Deb, Manas Dutta, Titikhsa Majumdar, along with technicians Sanjay Ghosh and Arijit Paul, whose coordination ensured smooth execution of the complex intervention.

Hospital authorities noted that this is the first successful uterine AVM embolization of its kind in Tripura, representing a significant milestone for advanced minimally invasive treatment capabilities in the state. The procedure was carried out entirely free of cost under the Ayushman Bharat.

Medical Superintendent Dr. Bidhan Goswami and RMO Dr. Bikash Debbarma also played an important role in ensuring timely arrangement of rare coil implants required for the life-saving procedure.

This achievement is being seen as a significant step forward for advanced interventional radiology and cardiology services in the state’s public healthcare system.
