Agartala, 12th June 2025: The Jamjuri Cow Market has been shut down indefinitely due to rising concerns over harassment faced by traders and transporters in various parts of the state, market secretary Noor Mohammad announced today.
According to Mohammad, cattle buyers and sellers have been struggling with increasing difficulties in transporting livestock, leading to financial losses. Typically, traders earn a profit of Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 per transaction, but that has been disrupted due to alleged intervention by authorities and local youths. He stated that the police administration has been stopping cattle carts if fees are not regularly paid, and in some cases, youths have taken livestock to cowsheds, from which no animals have reportedly been returned.
Traders claim the issue does not arise when farmers sell cows directly, but road transportation remains problematic. “The moment a cow is taken from the market or transported by road, obstacles emerge, making transactions difficult,” one trader explained.
Amid the ongoing disruptions, both Hindu and Muslim traders have unanimously agreed to keep the market closed until the situation improves.
