Agartala, 27th July 2026 : The Dharmanagar Sub-Divisional Committee of the Tripura Scheduled Caste Coordination Committee staged a massive rally and deputation programme on Monday, pressing for a 10-point charter of demands.
The rally, which began in front of the CPI(M) Dharmanagar Sub-Divisional Office, marched through the main thoroughfares of the town before culminating at the office of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM). A delegation then submitted a memorandum outlining key demands aimed at improving the socio-economic conditions of the Scheduled Caste community and the general public.
The demands included the immediate implementation of a caste-based census and an increase in Lok Sabha seats in Tripura with reserved representation for Scheduled Caste communities. The memorandum also sought free education and healthcare funded by the government, enhanced stipends for SC students, and the removal of income ceilings for eligibility. It called for expedited recruitment to vacant posts in government and semi-government offices, along with reservation in private sector jobs. To strengthen the rural economy, the committee demanded an extension of REGA and TUEP workdays to 200 annually, with daily wages fixed at Rs 500.
The charter further urged waiver of loans up to Rs 5 lakh for farmers, fishermen, and small entrepreneurs, coupled with reduced interest rates. It pressed for land distribution to the landless and grants of at least Rs 5 lakh for permanent housing. Social welfare measures included raising allowances to Rs 5,000 per month, re-inclusion of excluded beneficiaries, provision of 100 units of free electricity per family, and 10 kg of free rice per person. The memorandum also demanded immediate steps to control rising commodity prices.
Finally, the committee sought proportional reservation in business opportunities, allocation of stalls in government markets, and special welfare initiatives for fishermen, laundry workers, leather artisans, and members of the Harijan community.
The delegation included Sub-Divisional Secretary Tapas Sarkar, along with Ujjwala Das, Sitesh Ranjan Das, Niranjan Mallik, Ashok Das, and Gouranga Das. After submitting the memorandum, Sarkar warned that if the administration fails to act promptly, the committee will be compelled to launch a larger movement in the coming days.
This demonstration reflects growing pressure on the administration to address long-standing socio-economic grievances of marginalized communities in Tripura.
