Agartala, 5th January 2024: The Mayor of Agartala Municipal Corporation Dipak Majumder, has clarified that there is no plan to use the Netaji school ground as a parking space and the state government has no intention of forcing such a decision. He made this statement at a press conference on Friday, in response to the allegations made by some groups that the school ground would be destroyed for parking purposes.
Majumder said that traffic congestion is a major problem in Agartala city and the corporation is exploring various options to create parking facilities in different locations. He admitted that the Netaji school ground was one of the places that was discussed in a meeting a few days ago, but the school authorities did not consent to the proposal. He said that the corporation respected their decision and dropped the idea.
He also revealed that the initial discussion was to create an underground parking system under the school ground, which would not affect the surface level. He said that the corporation and the state government had planned to install an synthetic turf field on top of the parking system, which would improve the quality of the ground. He said that this was a visionary project that would benefit both the school and the city.
However, he accused some vested interests of spreading false rumours that the Netaji school ground would be converted into a parking lot and the school would lose its playground. He said that these groups were trying to create a controversy and politicize the issue. He urged them to stop misleading the public and refrain from interfering in the development works of the corporation and the state government.
He also informed that the state government had recently sanctioned Rs 6 crore for the construction of a boundary wall and a water drainage system for the school, which shows its commitment to the welfare of the students and the staff. He said that the corporation and the state government are working together to make Agartala a smart and modern city, and appealed to the people to support their efforts.
