Agartala, 5th March 2025: The much-anticipated management talent search camp organized by the Gomati district’s Sports Department began today at the Udaipur Post Complex ground. The event saw the participation of 312 young athletes with 104 players each from the sub-divisions of Udaipur, Amarpur and Karbook. However, the absence of dignitaries, who had promised to attend left the participants disheartened.
The students and players, many of whom traveled from remote villages had eagerly awaited the presence of Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy, MLA Abhishek Debroy and Gomati district’s District Magistrate Tarit Kanti Chakma. Their names were featured in the invitation letter raising expectations among the attendees. “We were so excited to see them in person and hear their words of encouragement,” said one young athlete. Unfortunately, the dignitaries did not show up, citing other commitments. This left the rural athletes feeling let down. “We came all the way here hoping to meet them, but they didn’t keep their word,” expressed another participant with visible disappointment.
Despite their absence, the event was graced by MLA Jitendra Majumdar, MLA Ranjit Das, Gomati Zilla Parishad Sabhadipati Debal Debroy, Udaipur Municipal Council Chairman Shital Chandra Majumdar and social workers Sabita Nag and Sunny Saha. Killa Block BAC Chairman Bagan Hari Molsom and officials from the Sports, ICA department were also present. The camp commenced with the hoisting of the flag and the lighting of the ceremonial lamp followed by a rendition of the national anthem by students of Udaipur Haryananda English Medium School.
In their speeches, the guests highlighted the importance of sports in shaping young talent and promoting physical fitness. “Sports not only help in discovering hidden talents but also serve as a powerful tool to keep children away from harmful habits like drug addiction,” remarked MLA Jitendra Majumdar. He further emphasized the state government’s commitment to nurturing grassroots talent. “We aim to provide opportunities for young athletes to shine, both at the state and national levels,” he added.
The camp is part of a larger initiative to identify and promote young talent. From March 21 to 23, state-wide competitions will be held for under-10 boys and girls in athletics and football, as well as under-14 boys and girls in kho kho and kabaddi. A total of 104 players from the Gomati district will be selected to participate in these events.
However, the event was not without its shortcomings. The competition, scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., was delayed until after 11 a.m., leaving participants waiting under the scorching sun. Many students, who had traveled long distances, expressed frustration over the delay. “We were made to sit through long lectures instead of starting the games on time,” said one disgruntled player.
