Agartala, 13th March 2024: In a distressing turn of events, a 12-year-old girl fall victim to an alleged sexual assault in the Bagbasa area of North Tripura district. The minor, who had been attending a ‘Griha Pravesh’ ceremony in the vicinity, was reportedly taken from the celebration by a 27-year-old man under the guise of familial ties.
The suspect, identified as Tatan Bagchi, is said to have lured the girl away from the neighbor’s house where she was staying, claiming to be her brother. It was during their return journey that the heinous act is alleged to have taken place. The girl’s mother has since filed a formal complaint, accusing Bagchi of raping her daughter on the street in the early hours of the morning.
Responding swiftly, local authorities took the young girl into care, ensuring she received medical attention at the district hospital before being placed under police protection. The case has been taken up by the Dharmanagar Mahila Police Station, with District Superintendent of Police Bhanupada Chakraborty describing the incident as a “very tragic” and “brutal abuse” of a minor.
In a significant development, police forces conducted a search operation that led to the apprehension of Bagchi at the Ranibari tea garden located in the Kadamtala block. The accused is now detained, undergoing interrogation as the investigation continues to reveal.
This incident has cast a shadow over the community, highlighting the urgent need for increased vigilance and protective measures for the vulnerable segments of society. The authorities have pledged a thorough investigation, seeking justice for the young victim and reinforcing the message that such acts of violence will not be tolerated.
